Mixing Depth Estimation from Operational JMA and KMAWind-Profiler Data and its Preliminary Applications: Examples from Four Selected Sites
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this study, mixed layer (ML) height information is extracted from the range-corrected signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) data of wind profilers operated by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). The altitude where the maximum backscattered power is received by a wind profiler is regarded as ML height. Four sites (Kumagaya and Mito in Japan; Munsan and Gangneung in Korea) were tested on clear sky days, which were chosen using a sunshine ratio. The ML height information obtained was utilized to analyze the spatiotemporal variations of ML heights over Japan and to qualitatively evaluate the model mixing depth predicted by a KMA regional numerical weather prediction model. The frequency of the wind profiler is 1.36 GHz (1.29 GHz for sites in Korea), and the temporal resolution of the SNR data is 10 min. In the vertical, the operating resolutions are 300 m for the sites in Japan and 70 m

Operation of a Mobile Wind Profiler In Severe Clutter Environments
Wind profiling radars have been in use since the 1970s (Green et al. 1979). They are now being used with increasing frequency in operational meteorology under a wide range of conditions. One limitation to operation at many sites is contamination from ground and intermittent clutter and radio frequency interference (RFI). Currently, wind profiler radars must be deployed at locations with a minim...
متن کاملUncertainty Estimation in Stream Bed Sediment Fingerprinting Based on Mixing Model
Uncertainty associated with mixing models is often substantial, but has not yet been fully incorporated in models. The objective of this study is to develop and apply a Bayesian-mixing model that estimates probability distributions of source contributions to a mixture associated with multiple sources for assessing the uncertainty estimation in sediment fingerprinting in Zidasht catchment, Iran....
متن کاملOperational use of ATOVS radiances in global data assimilation at JMA
1. Introduction The Advanced TIROS Operational Vertical Sounder (ATOVS) radiances have been operationally assimilated in the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) global 3D-Var data assimilation system since 28 May 2003. It replaced TOVS/ATOVS retrievals, which had been assimilated in the JMA global data assimilation system. The direct assimilation of ATOVS radiances is superior to its retrieval as...
متن کاملPositive-Shrinkage and Pretest Estimation in Multiple Regression: A Monte Carlo Study with Applications
Consider a problem of predicting a response variable using a set of covariates in a linear regression model. If it is a priori known or suspected that a subset of the covariates do not significantly contribute to the overall fit of the model, a restricted model that excludes these covariates, may be sufficient. If, on the other hand, the subset provides useful information, shrinkage meth...
متن کاملShrinkage Preliminary Test Estimation under a Precautionary Loss Function with Applications on Records and Censored Ddata
Shrinkage preliminary test estimation in exponential distribution under a precautionary loss function is considered. The minimum risk-unbiased estimator is derived and some shrinkage preliminary test estimators are proposed. We apply our results on censored data and records. The relative efficiencies of proposed estimators with respect to the minimum ‎risk-unbiased‎&...
